dolphinsA fleet of Chinese merchant ships sailing through the hijack-prone Gulf of Aden has been saved from pirates by a pod of dolphins, according to Chinese state media reports.

Thousands of dolphins leapt out of the water as several suspected pirate vessels made their way towards the three ships forcing them to abandon their assault, the China’s Xinhua news agency reported.

“The suspected pirates ships stopped and then turned away. The pirates could only lament their littleness before the vast number of dolphins. The spectacular scene continued for a while,” Xinhua said.

Along with the United States, the European Union and Russia, China has sent several naval vessels to the Gulf to help stop attacks by Somali pirates.
