babygiraffeDozens of onlookers at the Rio Grande Zoo in Albuquerque, New Mexico, were treated this week to the birth of a baby giraffe – the zoo’s first new arrival in two years.

Zookeepers are 90 percent certain the new giraffe is male but will not know for sure for a couple of days, according to local TV station KRQE.

“There was a big crowd and there was a lot of excitement and they were really happy when it finally hit the ground,” said zookeeper Ted Trujillo. The giraffe, who stands nearly six feet tall, took his first wobbly steps around 30 minutes later.

“Kashka, the mother, is well and caring for the healthy calf,” the zoo said in an update on its website. See photos of the birth
