London gorillas seek love with French pin-up
London Zoo’s lonely female gorillas have been given a sneak preview of their new playmate – a 20-stone 12-year-old ape called Yeboah who is due to arrive in London from a zoo in northern France later this year.
Zoo staff gave each of the three female apes, Zaire, Effie and Mjukuu, a photo of Yeboah to prepare them for his arrival. The apes have been without male company since the death of silverback gorilla Bobby last December.
One of the apes shrieked with delight when handed the photo, while another pinned the poster to a tree and stared at it lovingly. But the third seemed less impressed, scrunching the photo into a ball and eating it.
But Tracey Lee of London Zoo’s Gorilla Kingdom said she was confident Yeboah’s relocation across the English Channel in search of romance would not be in vain.
“He’s a very charming, fun loving and intelligent gorilla,” she said. “I think it will be love at first sight when the girls are let onto the island to look at the pictures – it’s going to be a very special moment.”
