Facebook fury as ‘Monkey Life’ faces TV axe
Facebook fans of a British TV show following the antics of monkeys and apes at a primate rescue centre have launched an online campaign to save the show from the axe.
Channel Five has broadcast the last three series of “Monkey Life” but but says it won’t be showing a fourth series already filmed by producers Primate Planet Productions.
The show is set at the Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset in the south of England – home to some 240 primates. The centre was originally set up to provide a home for chimpanzees rescued from Spanish beach resorts. Other residents include abused pets, smuggled apes and circus and laboratory animals from all over the world.
Primate Planet managing director Louise McCance-Price told the Guardian that “Monkey Life” was an “important tool” in creating awareness about primate conservation and urged Channel Five to reconsider their decision – but said the show was also being offered to other broadcasters.
“We won’t stop until we have found funding and a home for ‘Monkey Life’ – this show must go on,” she said.
“Monkey Life’s” launch in 2007 was credited at the time with tripling Channel Five’s evening viewing figures.
