A German Shepherd dog which plunged off cliffs into dangerous seas just hours after being collected by his new owners has been rescued by coastguards.

Scottish couple Andy and Joanna Finlay decided to take five-year-old Twinnie for a walk along the cliffs at Portlethen while driving home with the dog, according to BBC Scotland.

But the excitable pet ran off and then stepped back over the cliff, falling 65 feet into the sea, narrowly missing dangerous rocks.

“We were getting back in the car and the dog took off. We were searching for around half an hour,” said Mr. Finlay. “Then we found him and were trying to get him, but he backed off and fell. Luckily he seemed to go straight into the water rather than hitting rocks.”

Coastguards and a dog handler were called and rescued Twinnie from the shoreline.

“They saw the glint of his eyes with a torch and found him lying half in and half out of the water. He was absolutely terrified but otherwise fine. He seems very happy now. The rescuers did a sterling job,” said Mr. Finlan.
