hippo.smallA two-tonne hippopotamus escaped from a private zoo in Montenegro earlier in the week by swimming out of its enclosure on rising flood waters.

Zoo owner Dragan Pejovic said he planned to wait until the flooding recedes before trying to get the potentially dangerous creature back into its enclosure. It is currently being fed bread and hay and staying in the swimming pool of a restaurant owned by Pejovic in the village of Plavnica.

While hippos have a reputation for ferocity in the wild, Pejovic said the 11-year-old called Nikica was used to humans and wouldn’t react “unless someone attacks and kicks her. Private security guards are monitoring the animal.
