World zoos in race for Twitter glory
Zoos around the world are racing to become the first to collect 10,000 followers on Twitter.
Washington DC’s National Zoo is currently among the pacesetters in the United States with more than 7,100 followers while Phoenix Zoo almost has 7,000 and San Francisco Zoo has around 6,500.
“Grab your running shoes & join us! We’ve entered a #ZooRace w/ @sfzoo @australiazoo @PhoenixZoo. 1st zoo in the world to 10k followers wins!” the National Zoo tweeted.
But Australia Zoo, made famous by the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, could be the favourite. The zoo on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast already has more than 7,100 followers and is expected to pick up more followers as Australians wake up on Friday morning.
“We’re calling on the Khaki Army to help us win #ZooRace! Zoo’s around the world R racing to reach 10,000 followers. Let’s make Steve proud!” the zoo said in its latest tweet.
Other zoos were also trying to join the race with Los Angeles Zoo picking up around 3,500 followers and Oregon Zoo reaching the 3,000 mark. But London Zoo was trailing dismally with less than 800 followers, despite efforts to bolster numbers.
“The #ZooRace is on. First zoo to reach 10K followers. It’s a long shot, but please RT to help ZSL London Zoo stand a chance
” the zoo said.
